Which Algae Do You Have? It Changes the Treatment

"Algae" is three different problems wearing one name, and the right product and timing depend on which one is in your pond. Treating the wrong one wastes your money — we see it constantly on self-treated ponds.

Filamentous Algae ("Pond Scum")

The stringy, cottony mats that start on the bottom in spring, float up as they produce oxygen, and blanket the surface by June. The most common algae call we get in Harrisburg — and the most treatable, if it's staged correctly.

Planktonic Algae ("Green Water")

Microscopic algae that turn the whole pond pea-soup green. Some bloom is normal and even feeds the food chain — runaway blooms mean a nutrient problem, and a sudden die-off can crash your oxygen and kill fish overnight.

Chara & Bottom Growth

Feels crunchy, smells musky, looks like a plant but it's algae. Chara carpets pond bottoms and laughs at products meant for surface scum. Different treatment entirely.

Harmful Algal Blooms

Blue-green "algae" (cyanobacteria) can produce toxins dangerous to dogs, livestock, and people. Paint-like blue-green surface streaks deserve caution — keep pets out of the water and have it looked at before anyone swims.

Fix the Cause

When should algae be treated in Central PA?
Filamentous algae is easiest to control early — spring, when mats are small and water passes 60°F. By July a fully blanketed pond needs staged treatment. Prevention programs start even earlier, before growth takes off.
Will treatment kill my fish?
At label rates the products are safe for fish — the danger is oxygen loss from too much algae decomposing at once, which is why we stage heavy ponds. Copper products also have limits around trout and some pond situations; that's part of why identification and licensing matter.
Why does my pond get worse every year?
Nutrients accumulate: every leaf, grass clipping, goose dropping, and fertilizer rain event feeds next year's bloom, and dying algae itself becomes bottom muck that feeds the next round. Breaking that cycle takes muck reduction and nutrient management, not just a yearly kill.
Is some algae actually good?
