About the Credential Bare-ground and right-of-way work is a specific PA Department of Agriculture license category — Category 10, Right-of-Way & Industrial Weed Control. It's not lawn care, it's not pest control, it's its own classification because the products, rates, and application methods are different. Devon has held Category 10 since 2005, alongside seven other applicator categories. If a vendor offering this work can't name their license category, ask why.

This is the service for properties where you don't want anything growing — period. Most callers are commercial, industrial, agricultural, or HOA property managers dealing with one or more of these:

Fence Lines

Perimeter fencing along farms, commercial yards, storage facilities, and industrial sites. A clean fence line keeps the fence visible, lets mowers run flush, and stops vines, briars, and saplings from pulling fabric and posts down over time.

Gravel Lots & Drives

Equipment yards, contractor lots, parking areas, storage lots, and gravel access drives. Vegetation breaking through gravel ruins the surface, holds moisture, and shortens the life of the lot. We knock it down and keep it bare through the season.

Equipment & Storage Yards

Around fuel tanks, propane cages, generators, transformer pads, dumpster pads, and outdoor equipment storage. Keeps inspections clean, reduces fire load, and stops vegetation from hiding rust, leaks, or damage.

Utility & Easement Right-of-Ways

Access lanes, easements, and utility corridors that need to stay clear for inspection, maintenance, or compliance. Treated to maintain bare ground or to control specific tall-growing species per the easement's vegetation spec.

Building & Foundation Perimeters

Around commercial buildings, warehouses, shops, and outbuildings. A clean perimeter band makes pest control more effective, keeps rodents from nesting against foundations, and prevents moisture wicking from overgrown vegetation.

HOA & Common-Area Vegetation

Retention basin edges, entryway monuments, sign bases, mailbox clusters, and shared infrastructure where the HOA wants clean lines without weekly string-trimming labor.

How the Service Works

Bare-ground programs are built around two products working together:

Knockdown (post-emergent). A non-selective herbicide kills the existing vegetation that's already up.
Residual (pre-emergent). A soil-active residual keeps new seeds from germinating for the rest of the season. Depending on product and rate, residual can run from a few months to a full season.

Most commercial properties get treated once or twice a year. Heavy seed-pressure sites (next to overgrown adjacent land, high-traffic gravel lots) sometimes get a mid-season touch-up. We talk through the realistic schedule before the first treatment so you know what you're signing up for.

Pollinator-Aware Bare-Ground Work Devon is a working beekeeper. That doesn't disappear when the job switches from lawn to industrial — but it's worth being straight about what bare-ground work actually is. If you've asked for a kill-all bare-ground result, everything inside that zone dies, flowering plants included. That's the job. There's no version of a sterile gravel lot that spares the clover.

Where the beekeeping shows up is at the edges: we don't blanket-spray over adjacent pollinator habitat, we account for spray drift toward bee yards, wildflower strips, and neighbouring farms, and we'll tell you before we treat if the line you want bare runs closer to something sensitive than you realise. Bare ground means bare ground in the target zone — and nothing beyond it. If protecting flowering cover inside the zone matters to you, say so up front and we'll talk about a selective program instead, which is a different job with a different result.

What We Don't Do

Land clearing or brush mowing. If the vegetation is taller than waist-height brush or includes saplings over an inch thick, that's a mechanical job first (mower, brush hog, chainsaw). We'll come back and treat after.
Pipeline or railroad ROW under contract to the operator. Most of those are bid through the utility's vegetation management contractor. We can quote sub-contracted work but won't pursue the direct contract.
Aquatic ROW. Vegetation in or directly over water uses different products and falls under our aquatic service — different page, different category (Cat 9).

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does bare ground last after one treatment?

Depends on the product, the rate, and the site. A typical commercial bare-ground program holds three to six months. High-pressure sites — gravel lots next to overgrown property lines, heavy bird and wind seed traffic — sometimes need a mid-season touch-up. We tell you the realistic window for your site before we treat.

Will the treatment damage anything I want to keep?

Non-selective and soil-residual products will kill or stunt anything they reach. That's why placement matters. On fence lines and perimeters next to lawn, ornamentals, or crop fields, we keep the treatment band tight, use shielded application where needed, and choose products with shorter soil mobility so the residual stays put. If a sensitive plant is too close to the line you want bare, we'll tell you before we treat, not after.

Is bare-ground treatment safe to walk on, drive on, or store equipment on?

Once dry — typically a few hours after application — yes. Standard re-entry intervals are on each product's label and we follow them. We post or flag the treated area as required and brief your site contact before we leave.

Do you require a contract for commercial work?

No. Per-visit billing same as our residential services. Most commercial accounts settle into one or two visits a year on their own once they see the pattern. We're happy to write a multi-visit program if your purchasing or accounting needs one, but it's never a condition of service.

Can you treat right up to a stream, pond, or wetland?

There are setback rules around surface water for most ROW products. We follow them. If vegetation needs to be controlled in or directly adjacent to water, that's an aquatic-labeled product and falls under our aquatic service. Different category, different products, same applicator.
